Reasons for impeller corrosion in DP type self-balancing horizontal multistage centrifugal pumps

2025-07-25

DP type self-balancing horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pumps are widely used in industrial fluid transportation. Impeller corrosion is a common problem that negatively impacts pump performance and lifespan. The following are the causes of impeller corrosion.

I. Chemical Corrosion

When the fluid medium contains corrosive chemicals, these substances react chemically with the impeller material, causing material corrosion. Different impeller materials have different resistance to chemical corrosion. For example, stainless steel impellers have good resistance to general acid-base media corrosion, but they may also suffer corrosion in strongly corrosive media.

II. Electrochemical Corrosion

In humid environments, an electrolyte film may form on the impeller surface, causing electrochemical reactions with ions in the medium, leading to electrochemical corrosion. In addition, impellers made of different metal materials may experience galvanic corrosion or contact corrosion when in contact with electrolyte solutions.

III. Physical Factors

1. Solid particles or impurities in the fluid, when passing through the impeller, cause wear and impact on the impeller surface, accelerating the corrosion process.

2. Changes in flow rate and fluid pressure can also lead to impeller corrosion. High-speed flow and high-pressure environments intensify the impact and erosion of the fluid on the impeller.

IV. Improper Operation and Maintenance

1. Improper operation may cause the medium temperature to be too high or too low, intensifying chemical and electrochemical corrosion.

2. Lack of regular maintenance and inspection may lead to deposits or biofouling on the impeller surface, which can accelerate the corrosion process.

To address the above issues, the following measures can be taken:

1. Select appropriate materials; choose corrosion-resistant impeller materials based on the medium's characteristics.

2. Control operating conditions; maintain appropriate medium temperature and flow rate.

3. Regularly inspect and maintain; remove deposits and biofouling from the impeller surface.

4. For severely corrosive environments, consider using anti-corrosion coatings or special treatments.

In summary, the causes of impeller corrosion in DP type self-balancing horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pumps mainly include chemical corrosion, electrochemical corrosion, physical factors, and improper operation and maintenance. Understanding these causes and taking appropriate measures can effectively extend the impeller's lifespan and improve pump performance and reliability.
